What Does Raza Reforma Mean – Just a Couple of Reformed Guys with a Podcast Explain

Today’s episode is a wonderfully moving conversation with our brothers over on RazaReforma podcast. We discussed their testimonies, where each tells how God brought them from alcoholism, prison, near homelessness, to the foot of the cross. They talk about their time at Shepherds Conference, their families, and work during this time of social distancing. Matt, who is a pastor in a small town near Lubbock, TX, and Sonny, who works for Tom Pennington’s church, both give us a glimpse of what churches are dealing with in this pandemic. We hope that this conversation will be edifying, and want to thank our brothers for giving us so much of their time! If you don’t know, I’m a bit of a huge Dallas Cowboys fan, being born and raised in Dallas, TX, and these brothers are also fans which means they’re obviously men of good taste.

We’re very excited to continue supporting other podcasts, if you have suggestions for some that you’d like us to check out please feel free to leave them in the comments. Below is a time stamped outline, that we hope will be helpful for anyone who wants to skip through the episode to certain points. Don’t miss the blooper reel, waiting as ever, at the end like a cherry on top! You can, of course, listen across all major podcasting platforms such as PodbeaniTunesSpotifyGoogle PlayiHeart RadioStitcher, and in video form on Youtube. We also now have a Patreon page, which you can find here https://www.patreon.com/Tulipshoneyhub. As always, beloved brethren, be good Berean’s and study to show yourselves approved.

How Should a Christian Deal With Anxiety?

Can you think of any other paths that Scripture lays out for us to battle the sin of faithlessness? What is your favorite hymn when dealing with trials, or sorrow?

A Hymn From the Past

Far From the World, O Lord, I Flee – by William Cowper

Today’s hymn is another of William Cowper’s, again focusing on the way a Christian should handle crisis. It’s easy to say “be anxious for nothing” but far more difficult to do it, or to explain how one goes about doing it. Anxiety, fear, faithlessness, can overwhelm even the most seasoned believer. How many messages did I hear about being anxious for nothing in the WoF movement? Too many to count. Unfortunately, I can count all the ways we were taught not to be anxious on one hand. It was simple, you rebuke the fear and the cause of the fear, then ignore it. Cancer? Job loss? Pandemic? Oh no, don’t pay that any attention, proceed as if all is well and surely don’t confide in another church goer, or heaven forbid, a pastor or elder. That would be speaking negative confessions. The answer was actually not an answer, the anxiety wasn’t gone, we just had to keep our problems to ourselves.

What is the actual answer? God has given us means of handling anxiety and fear, rather than expecting us to ignore them or pretend our words have magical powers. I can name four different avenues for renewing our minds when fear threatens to overwhelm us, if you can think of more from Scripture please add them in the comments below. 1. Prayer – what does it really mean to be praying ceaselessly? It doesn’t mean becoming a monk, refusing to eat, sleep, or talk. But to be bringing our thoughts, concerns, praises, thanksgivings to the throne of God throughout the day. In this way, when anxiety or fear begins to bubble up in our minds we have a place of authority to take them. We can rest at the foot of the throne, pouring out our troubles before the God of the universe. One other point about prayer is that we can pray for one another, we don’t have to be alone in this. Asking believers for prayer, and praying for brothers and sisters-in-Christ is such a joy to me, as I often remember what it was like to keep it all inside.

2. Study – When we go to Scripture for devotions and study we learn about God, about His character, about the bigger picture that we tend to miss during our anxious days. We’re grounded again on the truth of God’s sovereignty, reminded of eternity, reminded of His call to share the Gospel, and reminded of mercy when we stumble into fearful anxiety. This is another thing we don’t have to do alone, we can have Bible studies together! 3. Worship – This is the actual point of this post, below is another beautiful hymn that reminds us of our true home. Job asked His wife about this, when she recommended that he just curse God and die. How could he do that? How could he praise God when everything was good, and then turn his back on God when things were, well, awful? When we give God the glory that He so truly is owed, even when we are hurting, we are reminded of the God we serve. Through the words of a Psalm or a hymn we can sing of His love, His mercy, His salvation, of all that He has already done. This takes our mind off of the momentary affliction and puts it where it out to be, reorienting our perspective back on what we have already been given! 4. Fellowship – final thought on this is how we can fellowship. True that right now we’re unable to meet in large numbers, but when we talk with one another about God, about our trials and His provisions, we are baring one another burdens. We’re not alone, we have a family, a body of believers, each with their own battles against the flesh. Alone we might feel like we’re the single most wretched sinner to ever be forgiven, but when we are brought together and enjoy a time of fellowship we see that God is sanctifying all of us. What a kindness God has given to His children!

Can you think of any other paths that Scripture lays out for us to battle the sin of faithlessness? What is your favorite hymn when dealing with trials, or sorrow? Mine is Pass Me Not by Fanny Crosby, but these lyrics below are also edifying and beautiful. I hope you are blessed by this hymn, and please let me know if there is anyway I could be praying for you. As always, beloved brethren, be good Berean’s and study to show yourselves approved.

Far from the world, O Lord, I flee,
From strife and tumult far;
From scenes where Satan wages still
His most successful war.

The calm retreat, the silent shade,
With prayer and praise agree;
And seem by Thy sweet bounty made
For those who follow Thee.

There, if Thy Spirit touch the soul,
And grace her mean abode,
O with what peace, and joy, and love,
She communes with her God!

There, like the nightingale, she pours
Her solitary lays;
Nor asks a witness of her song,
Nor thirsts for human praise.

Author and Guardian of my life,
Sweet Source of light divine,
And, all harmonious names in one,
My Saviour,–Thou art mine!

What thanks I owe Thee, and what love,
A boundless, endless store,
Shall echo through the realms above
When time shall be no more!

Friday MEGA List & Live Panel Discussion

Today, dear ones, we’re very excited to have the privilege of holding our first ever live panel discussion on Tulips & Honey! Joining us this afternoon to discuss church and evangelism during social distancing is Justin Peters, Susan Heck, Dawain Atkinson, Doreen Virtue, and Phil Johnson! We’re so honored to have each of these dear brothers and sisters-in-Christ joining us. If you follow us on Facebook, you’ll be able to watch live and ask questions there. If you prefer Youtube, you can head straight to the event by following the link below. Be sure to subscribe so that you don’t miss any future events. Next Monday we’ll be dropping an episode interviewing our brothers-in-Christ from the RazaReforma Podcast, it was such a blessing to hear their testimony and see how God led them to where they are today. If you missed it, this past Tuesday The Aquila and Priscilla Hour released an episode about Pragmatism in the church and today The Chuck and Lo Show dropped an interview with Be A Berean’s Michael Coughlin. Don’t miss Emma’s newest episode tomorrow continuing in her series on glorifying God over on Always, Only.

Live Panel Discussion

For our MEGA List today we had some help from our wonderful Humblebee’s that sent us great recommendations. Starting with Jan who recommended this homemakers Facebook group here. Luke Schmeltzer, host of Steady Anchor Podcast, recommended the free Ligonier series which will be available all summer, as well as these resources here. He’s also just released a new episode titled “Christ and Corona” which I highly recommend. As I mentioned above, Michael Coughlin is joining Chuck and Lo today, but you can also find him on his blog, or hear him refuting atheists on his podcast here. Our honorary BrotherBee, Patrick Studabaker, from Cave To The Cross Apologetics has a great video editing and website design business, a talent he uses to not only bring us great content on his own podcast, but also to bless churches. If that is something you have a need of, or you just want to support our brother-in-Christ, check it out Manos Media LLC. If you’ve tuned in to the latest Aquila and Pricila Hour you heard Emily and Zack discussing a helpful article by Tim Challies, which she recommended and you can find here. I also want to slip in a shout out to her and Zack for creating a brand new website which you can find here! Doesn’t it look great? Well done y’all! Last recommendation was added by Becca herself! She found a devotional on the Youversion app created by one of our BrotherBee’s, Joel, who has been so very encouraging to us from the start! Fear in the Time of Coronavirus is available here. Thank you to all our listeners who sent us these helpful links, you’re all such a blessing to us! I hope you’re all able to tune in today at 1:30 CST for the live panel, please pray that all goes well with technology! As always, beloved brethren, be good Berean’s and study to show yourselves approved.

Guest Interviewed on The B.A.R. Podcast

Becca and I had the honor of being interviewed by Dawain Atkinson on The B.A.R. Podcast. I was a lot more nervous to be interviewed then I am when I’m interviewing, so it was fascinating to be on the other side. Dawain has been such an encouragement to us, and I can’t thank him enough for all his kindness and support. You can find both of our episodes right here: http://thebarpodcast.com or follow The B.A.R. Podcast on any major podcasting platform. Both of us had the opportunity to share our testimonies, and the background of how we ended up podcasting. I pray that the Lord will use our testimonies to encourage and edify believers, and prick the conscious of the lost leading them to Gods Word, and the truth of the cross.

It's The End of The World and We Feel Fine

During such an anxious time, we thought it would be helpful to have a little fun and bring a little bit of laughter to your day. We all hope that this small bit of entertainment in the middle of all the news reports will be a blessing. Below is an outline of the episode, without timestamps to give a little intrigue. I’ve also included a link to Friday’s Mega list, and below it the outline for that as well. Below that is a link to a live group chat we had on Facebook with a few other podcasters. We talked about a lot of things, and hope to do this again soon. I hope that these videos will be an encouragement to anyone who is having to self quarantine.

Throwback Thursday: Intelligent Design – The Miracle of Life Part X

As you probably recall, a human beings body is designed to attack anything foreign, life viruses, but did you know the woman’s body naturally produces a way to prevent those same processes from destroying the life growing inside her? How about the tiny pieces that all have to come together perfectly, at just the right time, to make that little image bearer’s heart beat, lungs not drowned in fluid, brain synapsis fire? I covered all of these miraculous events in this ten part series…

Hello, dear ones, today’s throwback Thursday was one of my favorite series to write! Way back in December of 2017 I began The Miracle of Life series. This is a particularly fun throwback as many are suggesting a baby boom might be on the horizon. As you probably recall, a human beings body is designed to attack anything foreign, like viruses, but did you know the woman’s body naturally produces a way to prevent those same processes from destroying the life growing inside her? How about the tiny pieces that all have to come together perfectly, at just the right time, to make that little image bearer’s heart beat, lungs not drowned in fluid, brain synapsis fire? I covered all of these miraculous events in this ten part series, links to each individual article can be found at the end. Now, in our new shop, we are also able to create maternity shirts! Isn’t that neat? Great time for a baby boom, and a throwback Thursday.

Intelligent Design – The Miracle of Life Part X

Beloved brethren we are going to wrap this miracle up in a swaddling blanket and end this series. Pregnancy is actually a ten month affair, however only 5% of moms carry their blessings all the way to their due date. For me, in particular, Kayliegh was born several weeks early due to complications in my pregnancy. I just want to give some last minute thoughts on how miraculous child bearing is, and leave you with a little more awe and wonder at the sovereign God we serve.

In the last weeks of pregnancy the baby prepares for birth, sitting lower and sometimes head down. The bones in the babies head are not hardened like other bones in their body, they remain flexible for birth. At this point the antibodies from the mother are flowing heavily into the placenta, a process that once again involves miraculous acts done by tiny cells and protein machinery. One of the most amazing transformations take place in the babies body after it takes its first breath. The umbilical cord no longer works once the placenta has detached during the birth, which leads the heart to make some massive changes. For the first time, the babies heart and bypass arteries will begin pumping the blood to the lungs to be oxygenated. Once again, this rapid difference finds its cue from detailed instructions wound up in the tiniest book ever written, the DNA.

From conception to birth the DNA instruction manual is read, duplicated, and obeyed by the complex molecular structures within the human cells. How complicated is the miracle of life? Irreducibly so. Dear friends I can think of no greater example to give for the trials of this life than child bearing. I’ve never been the same, since I gave birth. It’s said the be the closest thing to death that you can do, and survive. The fruit of that trial, however, is priceless. Would I do it again? A million times if it meant I could have Kayliegh. It’s so worth it. Many of the trials we face on earth will be difficult, and yet the fruit is always so sweet on the other end.

I pray this series has been a blessing to you, brethren, and has allowed you to glimpse the greatness of the God who created us. He upholds all things in His capable, mighty hands. He is worthy of all honor, and praise, and glory! To the nonbelievers who are reading this, know with certainty that the day will come when the God who upholds this earth will judge it. We have all broken Gods Law, and as a just judge He will hold us accountable. The Bible says none are good, no not one. Our righteousness is as filthy rags to this holy, holy, holy God. It doesn’t matter how many days you go without murdering someone, the day you do it you will be a murder. You can’t go before an earthly judge and say ‘yeah I killed someone, but only once and all the other days I was a good person.’ It doesn’t work like that, you broke the law. If we, being sinners, know what justice ought to be, how much more so a righteous and just God?

Friend, I say this because I love you and I do not want you to be lost, you’ve sinned against an infinite God and on judgement day He will have no choice but to condemn you as guilty. God, in His mercy, sent His only begotten Son to have the cup of wrath, the very wrath that we stored up with our sinful desires, poured out on Himself. Christ took our punishment, He died in our place, so that we might be forgiven. He that knew no sin became sin so that wretched sinners could take on His righteousness. Repent of your sins, cry out to God for forgiveness, flee from the wrath to come. To my beloved brothers and sisters in Christ, be good Berean’s and study to show yourselves approved.

What Does it Mean to Be Biblical and Reformed: We Interview Dawain Atkinson From the B.A.R. Podcast

Hello! I hope this post finds you all doing well. I’m so excited to share today’s episode with you all. We had the privilege of interviewing the famous interviewer himself, Dawain Atkinson from The B.A.R. Podcast! It was fun to get the chance to ask him his own select questions, his testimony was as fascinating as it was moving, the advice he gave for other podcasters was so helpful, and his encouragement to us was humbling. We hope that this episode will be as edifying for you all as it was for us. Don’t forget to check out the bloopers at the end of this episode, and just to make sure you’re as excited for those as we are, there’s an extra fun graphic at the end of this post that I hope makes your day a little happier.
