Twisted Tuesday – The Straight and Narrow Way

It’s finally here, beloved brethren, it’s Reformation Day! Is that an official holiday yet? It should be! Instead of candy everyone could hand out tulips. I’ll admit, the ecumenical parties have tainted this anniversary for me. It’s frustrating to see the very thing the Reformers faught against, and in some cases died for, being imbraced and celebrated today. Compromise.

What a beautiful thing that this day fell on Twisted Tuesday, the day I usually discuss a verse that’s being misused, misinterpreted, or twisted. Instead of giving you a specific verse today I’m going to do something special to mark this anniversary.

Today I give you Sola Scriptura!

Scriptures alone.

We’re warned throughout the Bible to stay on the straight and narrow path. The other path, the wide and winding path, leads to eternal damnation. How do we find the straight and narrow way? There’s only one map, one instruction manual, that is the Bible. Sola Scriptura.

I’m not saying that commentaries aren’t helpful, they certainly are! Church history, expository preaching, descriptive books, are all helpful, in so much as they line up with the Word. When we decide that Gods Word will not be our sole authority we open ourselves up to the wide way. Where can we find the narrow path, only in the scriptures.

What is the narrow path? Salvation by grace, through faith in Christ alone, for the glory of God!

This is why the issue is so very important, this is no secondary discussion. This is the road to the Celestial City we’re talking about! If the Bible says stay straight, but your extra biblical, ‘prophetic’, follow your heart, book of advice says make a left turn, your in trouble. If you have a greater working knowledge of mans written word than Gods written Word you’re at risk to be led astray by every wind of doctrine.

So, my dear friends, be good Berean’s and study to show yourselves approved. And have a happy Reformation Day!

Intelligent Design – Miracle of Life Part V

Wow, beloved friends, we’re finally in the second trimester, the fourth month, of pregnancy in our series through the miracle of life! This is a month full of miracles so it will be difficult to sum them up. Fingerprints, nerves connecting and forming myelin, practice breaths, lung development, bones hardening, iron collecting in the blood, whew that’s one busy baby!

I want to focus on two of the things listed above, fingerprints and the development of the nervous system. Next week I’d love to discuss the lungs and heart. That’s my husband’s primary field of study, and as a NICU RT he, and his team, frequently deliver premature babies during the second trimester. These tiny images of God are sometimes no more than a pound in weight! So stay tuned for next weeks, because it’s going to be the best post in the series!

So why the finger prints? They’re a unique, often forgotten, way of showing the Designers creation. Every human being has an individual calling, all of God’s children have a specific role in the body of Christ. Just like no two fingerprints are alike, neither are two people exactly alike. While scientists believe the fingerprints form at 17 weeks, they’re still unsure how. They do, however, know why. Our finger ridges amplify vibrations from touch, which gives our nervous system a better understanding of what sensation is being caused. Evolution in a chance universe could never, statistically, account for this magnificent design.

That brings us to the second point I want to highlight, the developments within the nervous system. During this month the nerves begin to connect the brain with the rest of the body and begin to be covered in myelin. Myelination protects the nerves, and quickens the nervous systems ability to send messages to, and receive messages from, the brain. Once again the cells inside the baby know what to do, without giving scientists any indication of what signals them. The information, of course, for this process is already found within the DNA. This takes us back to a point I’ve made before, the ultimate chicken and egg conundrum. Nothing can form without the DNA instructions, the DNA is passed on through the seed of plants, animals, or humans. It gets even worse if you want to get more technical about the materials the DNA is made of, which needs DNA information to form.

Dear ones, the miracle of life can be seen throughout the pregnancy, from the complexity of DNA, cells, protein motors, to the hardening of the bones and development of the heart and lungs. Our best scientists can only speculate as to the whys, hows, where’s, and when’s. This is why we must put our trust, not in science (which is a tool used by failable men) but in God, His Son, His Holy Spirit, and the Word. God, the sovereign King of kings, forms these tiny lives in the womb. How great is the insult to Him, that our culture chalks this up to chance? I shudder to consider.

Brethren, let us be good stewards of the time we have on this Earth, by being good Berean’s and studying to show ourselves approved. What God do we serve? The one who upholds all things! He is worthy of all praise, all honor, and all glory!

Sunday Hymns from the Past – Happy the Man Who Feareth God

Happy the man who feareth God,Whose feet His holy ways have trod;

Thine own good hand shall nourish thee,

And well and happy shalt thou be.

 Thy wife shall, like a fruitful vine,

Fill all thy house with clusters fine;

Thy children all be fresh and sound,

Like olive-plants thy table round.

 Lo! to the man these blessings cleave

Who in God’s holy fear doth live;

From him the ancient curse hath fled

By Adam’s race inherited.

Out of Mount Zion God shall send,

And crown with joy thy latter end;

That thou Jerusalem mayst see,

In favor and prosperity.

He shall be with thee in thy ways,

And give thee health and length of days;

Yea, thou shalt children’s children see,

And peace on Israel shall be.

How Beautiful are the Feet

Beloved brethren, I will freely confess to you that I’ve been struggling. I have these beautiful moments where God has given strength for prayer and it flows from my spirit as deep cries out to deep. It’s not always the case, and at times I struggle to focus or stay awake. This week has been a struggle.

I’ve written before on the importance of study and prayer. Prayer is one of the most gracious gifts God has given His people. We have the opportunity to come before His thrown, knowing He hears us. There’s not a single president, prime minister, king or prince on this earth we could say the same of. The King of kings, Lord of lords, hears a wretch like me? And what do I do? Fall asleep? It’s been discouraging to say the least.

Last night, and this morning, I went before His thrown feeling more like a lost cause then a saved sinner. God, in His kindness, answered the unspoken prayer of my heart. I don’t usually listen to preaching early in the morning, today I did. How beautiful are the feet of the one bringing good news? Below is the sermon which brought hope, instruction, and rebuke. I hope you’ll pray for me, brethren, as I pray for you. I am daily encouraged and edified by your posts.

As always, dear friends, be good Berean’s and study to show yourselves approved.

Thursday Book Review – Love Wins

This month, in honor of the Reformations 500th Anniversary, I’ve been discussing books to stay away from on Thursday’s. Taking down every high and lofty thought that sets itself up against the Truth is just as needed today as it was 500 years ago.

I had a history teacher in Junior year that insisted on teaching through Forest Gump. Everyday before he would hit play on the movie he would play ‘we didn’t start the fire’ by Billy Joel. After a month or two the words will never leave my brain, I don’t remember anything else from that class but by golly I remember that song.

“We didn’t start the fire, it was always burning since the worlds been turning. We didn’t start the fire, no we didn’t light it but we tried to fight it.”

When we learn about the Reformation we realize that Luther, Knox, and Calvin didn’t begin the fight against false doctrine, they continued the work of previous generations. In fact, if you spend some time learning about ancient heresies you’ll see that the same fires they faught to put out in the 1500’s were around in the second century, and are still here today, although they often have their names changed.

Universalism is no different, Satan never comes up with anything new he just regurgitates what worked with previous generations. It may seem like I’ve picked Universalism this month on purpose, but actually it just seems like these are the most popular heretical, blasphemous books around today. Like ‘Love Wins’ by Rob Bell. This book was a best seller a few years ago, and we’re just now starting to see the fruit of the heresies he’s selling. Which is why it’s as important as ever that we warn our brothers and sisters about this wolf in sheeps clothing.

Below is a few videos going into greater detail as to why this book is so dangerous. One of the reasons our fathers in the faith were so successful during the Reformation is because they were ready to give a defense for the faith they had. Beloved, we’re not going to win awards, no ones going to cheer for us, we’ll never have statues build in our honor, for warning about popular books and famous teachers. That’s ok. The things of this world will pass away. What use is acclaim, if my brothers and sisters are being led astray? Let us be bold in our love for one another, and our desire to see each grow in the grace and the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

There are many lost who read, and adore, these books as well. Our stand against these unbiblical heresies are not only for our brethren, but also for those living in darkness. This is why we must continue to exercise discernment, many grevious wolves have entered the flock! Beloved friends, be good Berean’s therefore, and study to show yourselves approved.

In case you’d like to read a very clear, and accurate rebuttal of this book Pastor Jim did an excellent job here… https://veritasdomain.wordpress.com/2011/05/03/critique-of-rob-bells-theological-method-behind-his-soteriology/

The Unity of Heretics

Unity is the Christianese version of the secular ‘tolerance’. We’re consistently told to maintain unity, the church must unite. I was even told, before becoming a believer, that the reason we weren’t seeing the dead raised, the blind seeing, the mute speaking, and the lame walking was because the church had become disunified. Rather than the obvious answer from 2 Corinthians 12:12, that those are the signs of an Apostle, to give credence to the inspired nature of their writing.

Perhaps we’ve gotten too good, here in America, at twisted things to fit our own agendas. Perhaps too many have become lazy, people pleasing, fools ready to accept every wind of doctrine. Most likely it’s that Biblical knowledge is so lacking, and when there is no sound doctrine Biblical understanding decays. In other words, we’re a herd of starving sheep.

Let’s go back to the original meaning of heretic, found in our twisted scripture for today, Titus 3:10. Here Paul is exhorting Titus, and us as we read this verse, to reject a divisive man after the first and second warning. Heretic derives it’s meaning from the word in this verse, factious, translated divisive in other texts. A heretic, then, began with the meaning of one who divides.

I find the logic behind twisting unity in the Bible to be very unreasonable. On the one hand we’re told by the ecumenical, universalistic, crowd that this verse means we should reject anyone causing disunity. On the other hand, within the verse there is clear disunity between Paul and the man causing the problems. If we were supposed to be unified with all false versions of Christianity wouldn’t it make since for Paul here to say instead ‘warn your brother, unless it offends him. In which case, say nothing and continue in unity’.

The body of Christ should be unified, and I would certainly never turn away from a brother or sister over secondary issues. However, and this is the key, when someone comes with a different gospel we must seperate ourselves after rebuking this person. Hopefully this rebuke will win the person back to the true Gospel of grace by faith in Christ alone. If not, we can not have unity with them. For what does light have to do with darkness?

My heart has been truly grieved to see the lack of concern for the lost within the body of Christ. There seems to be two extremes, the first where the saved relish the lostness of the lost and enjoy wagging fingers in their direction. The second is where the saved ignore the lostness of the lost, preferring to be liked by them than to share the light within them.

Neither of these is love for others, both is love for self. How is this possible? Perhaps I was just such a wretched sinner when God saved me, all I can see that is good in me is Christ. If not for Him, there would not be a single redeeming quality for me to boast in. I’ve always been good at serving others, but I’ve always been even better at bragging and boasting of my service. The wretchedness of my sin threatening to ruin my marriage, destroy my family, and kill my soul. Self love? No thanks. Christ in me, that is all there is to love. I praise God that He rescued me, wholly apart from anything in me that was deserving. For His glory alone! SDG

Sorry for that little tirade, it’s free of charge. Why is unity dangerous within Christianity today? There are many false doctrines being taught, whether it’s the works faith of Catholicism, Mormonism, and Jahovahs Witnesses, the Universalism taught in the NAR and mainline liberal churches, or the prosperity gospel which has found its way into almost every denomination. All of these teach a gospel that can not save.

Have we become so cold, so calluse, or so fearful, that our heart doesn’t ache for these lost living in darkness? Do we have no desire for them to hear the true Gospel? If unity comes at the cost of a single soul, then the price is too high. This, beloved, is what happens when we fail to take the full counsel of Gods Word. It’s Reformation month, let us remember that men and women gave their lives to seperate from false doctrine, false teachers, and a false gospel. As always, brethren, be good Berean’s and study to show yourselves approved.

Intelligent Design – The Miracle of Life Part IV

Happy Monday, beloved brethren! I have been so greatly enjoying this series on how babies grow. I hope you all have been too! We’ve made our way, in past posts, through conception, the first month and the second month of the first trimester. Today we’re going to talk about something miraculous that happens in the third and final month of the first trimester.

What is that miraculous event? Bones!

During the third month the pregnancy hormone Progesterone slows the mothers digestion down allowing more nutrients to make their way to the growing bundle of joy inside her. Those nutrients are going to come in handy, as the cartalidge in the baby changes to bones and even teeth.

How does the mothers body know to slow digestion? How do the cells in the babies bod know when to ocifiy? Is this something that could have been figuring out through out millions of years of evolution? No. Month three is yet again filled with mysteries the secular scientists can’t explain with evolution or modern technology.

God, the sovereign King of kings, formed each of us in the womb. Such a God, which upholds all things, is surely worthy of all praise and honor and glory! Let us, therefore, be good Berean’s and study to show ourselves approved.

Sunday Hymns from the Past – Come, Holy Ghost, Come, Lord our God

Reformation month isn’t long enough to exhaust all of Luther’s beautiful hymns. Good thing it comes back around next year. I feel like a D.J. rolling out the top 100 hits from last ye…no sorry…500 years ago. One of my favorite things about hymns from the past is that they usually contain some form of doctrinal truth. Today’s Christian music is even worse than the previous generation of 7/11 music, although neither have any doctrine.

The Jewish culture has always known how music can teach, I can repeat a scripture to you a hundred times and you’ll eventually forget it. However, if I put that verse with a catchy tune you’ll have an easier time recalling it. These hymns from Luther are beautiful, elegant, well written, and full of Biblical truths. I hope you will be as blessed by this as I was. As always, be good Berean’s and study to show yourselves approved.

Come, Holy Ghost, come, Lord our God,And shed Thy heavenly gifts abroad
On us, and unto every heart

True faith and fervent love impart;

O Lord, Who by Thy heavnely light,

Hast called Thy Church from sinful night

Out of all nations, tribes, and places;

To thee we render thanks and praises:

Hallelujah. Hallelujah.

Thou Light Divine, most gracious Lord.

Revive us by Thy holy word,

And teach Thy flock in truth to call

On God, the Father of us all:

From all strange doctrines us preserve,

No other masters may we serve,

But Christ, Who is our only Saviour;

In Him we will confide for ever:

Hallelujah. Hallelujah

O Holy Ghost, kind Comforter,

Help us, with watchfulness and prayer,

‘Midst various trials Thee to obey,

And never from the truth to stray:

O Lord, by Thy almighty grace,

Prepare us so to run our race,

That we by Thy illuminations,

May gain heaven’s glorious habitation:

Hallelujah. Hallelujah

Martin Luther

Thursday Book Review – Discernment Needed

Beloved, this month, during the Reformations 500th anniversary, I’ve been talking about different books not to read. I’m going to do that in a different way today. I’m going to suggest a couple writers with whom I would highly suggest you stay away from.

A little leaven, leavens the whole lump. A glass filled with pure beautifully clean water, with a tiny drop of poison will still kill you. These two people may be encouraging, or uplifting, but they’re both preaching a different gospel then the one which saves. There are other ways to get encouraged and uplifted than handing our money over to those who propagate a damning message leading millions of confused and blinded sinners to hell.

Joel Osteen, and Joyce Meyers. I pick these two because they really represent two groups of main stream liberalism in the church. New Age WoF and Universalism.

Joyce Meyers, whether you realize it or not, has mixed a massive amount of New Age theology into her beliefs. The idea that we can ‘Change our mind to change our life’ is not a Biblically based belief. That is New Age, it’s mystisism, not Christianity. Your thoughts do not send out messages to the cosmos, positive thinking might be better for your health, but the universe doesn’t react to it. I know this is hard, I was actually a really big fan of hers before becoming saved. I had a lot of her books, and loved to watch her program on TBN. She is a false teacher, her gospel is not the Gospel of the Bible.

Joel Osteen is probably more obvious, he has literally denied Christ on national television several times. We need to avoid his books, beloved, like the plague. The only time we should give him is to pray for him, and his wife. Just like Meyers, I was also a huge fan of Osteen before getting saved. I praise God for the discernment He gives, and for the respectable men He has raised up today to speak out against these false prophets.

I added a few video clips at the bottom in case you want to hear more on this matter. I pray God will give us all a greater portion of discernment, beloved. As always, be good Berean’s and study to show yourselves approved.
